CUENTOS VIAJEROS HAS NOW BECOME A NON PROFIT ASSOCIATION
WE ARE NOW CALLED: ZAZANILLI NEHNEMI, CUENTOS VIAJEROS A.C. We have become a non profit association since last February and this change has brought us very good luck. Since then we have been working non-stop on several projects: we have published 4 story books and given many workshops and story telling functions. We have started the process of becoming part of the worldwide network of non-profit organizations dedicated to the keeping and rebuilding of oral traditions of each culture. |

WHO?
CUENTOS VIAJEROS
We are a cultural organization of great experience in storytelling and the promotional work surrounding this skill. The story tellers of Cuentos Viajeros meet with the community that invites us. We listen to the people’s memories, tales and legends and then we write these stories.
With these new stories we prepare a story telling session which includes music and return to the community to present them with this show. Likewise we travel to other communities presenting this finished work. To secure these stories Cuentos Viajeros publishes them in a book which is handed over to the community.
In this way, us artists who form Cuentos Viajeros, are pleased to contribute to the necessary labor of recuperating and reviving the oral tradition of our many Mexican communities.
WHY?
Migration, unemployment, disintegration of family structure and values, etc., are the socio economic conditions of our country at the end of the XXth century and beginning of the XXI st. This situation has managed to bring the loss or the weakening of oral tradition of the many different social groups of Mexico.
People now have very little contact with their myths, their legends and their stories. But this cultural wealth is still existent, sleeping in the collective memory of the communities, waiting to be summoned and awakened.
A community gets to know itself, to build its identities, through its myths, its legends and stories. We have seen that the health of a group of women and men depends on the health of their common stories. As experienced story tellers we have learned that the dignity of a People is based on the strength of its history, written and oral. Therefore as an organization of professional story tellers, Cuentos Viajeros promises to work hard to contribute to the reconciliation of our communities with the force of their oral tradition. |
